How to get a Replacement Social Security Card

Your Social Security card is one of the most important documents you own. But, since it is small in size, it is quite easy to lose track of it, particularly since you need to hold onto it for the duration of your life. Thankfully, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has made it possible to obtain a replacement card. In the event you lose your card, here are some ways to get a new one.

Apply online
Applying online is the easiest way to apply for a new Social Security card. To be eligible to apply online, you must verify your U.S. citizenship with the SSA. You must also create a my Social Security online account. To do so, you must have a valid state-issued driver’s license or identification card. Once the SSA verifies your information, as long as everything checks out, you can continue with your online application.

Fill out the Form by Hand
If you cannot apply online, you can still apply for a new card. All you need to do is print out the application and fill it out completely. You can then mail the form and the other required documents to your local SSA office, or drop them off in person. You can easily find your local office by doing a simple online search or visiting www.ssa.gov.

The Necessary Documents
For your application for a replacement Social Security card to be complete, you must include the following documents with the application form:

  •  Proof of your age
  • Proof of your U.S. citizenship
  • Proof of your identity.

Some common forms of identification the SSA accepts include:

  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • State ID.

If you do not have one of the above forms of Identification, the SSA will also accept:

Regardless of the identifying documents you provide, they must all be originals or copies certified by the issuing office. They may not be photocopies, notarized paperwork, or expired.

After you have submitted your documents, you should receive your replacement Social Security card within 10 days of the application’s approval and processing. It is important to keep in mind that there is a limit on the number of times you can request a replacement card. So, be extra careful with it once you receive it.
